Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Is man really born with a evil persona or a persona that is worthy as an angel or is man born naked for a reason because he has nothing to bring to this world but himself? A person is not innately any characteristic, he was brought to the world from love and must choose to love or not. Mother Theresa explains this best by saying, "Everyone was created to be loved and to love." The novel, Lord of the Flies, has characters that were not brought to the island good or evil, but has characters that changed because the atmosphere that they are in changed them. Because of the environment that you are in makes you become a certain person, you change with the circumstances of your environment, and interact with the condition of your environment. Major events affect your life in drastic ways. A marriage, for instance is a major occurrence and different kinds of marriages can drastically change your life. A marriage that is abusive emotionally and physically can make your life full of hatred, you could be depressed, you could see your self as less a person than you are, and you could also be a frightened person because of it. A marriage completely different is one full of love. A marriage like that can cause a person to act blissful, to go out and do more things on account of your support system, and you can show other people to have loving lives like yours. All the characters, as one, are in a kind of marriage together, they lived concurrently and supported each other. The marriage was abusive, they taunted each other, especially Piggy. They taunted him at first meeting by saying this, "He's not Fatty... his real name's Piggy"(21). On account of that Piggy felt not worthy to other characters in the novel and didn't get to show his more intelligent side to everyone. Events are a primary device that causes people to act a certain way. If the characters didn't live so close together and taunt Piggy, would he have acted the way he did through the course of the novel? Being brought into particular situations can alter your life. To cite an instance, a child being taken from his home, the only place he knew, and put into a foster home would be a particular situation that could alter one's life. The other place he lived in may have been harmful to his well-being and it was a positive occurrence that he was brought out of his home. On the other hand, the foster home could affect his well-being in a more negative way than his old home. The Lord of the Flies is based upon the fact that these children were suddenly thrusted into a new environment that in the end affected them in a very negative way. The conversation Ralph has with the naval officer in the end expresses how a person from the outside can't believe that children could be killing each other just because they are alone on an island; the officer says," We saw your smoke. What have you been doing? Having a war or something?" (201). The truth was that their new environment, the island, was a big reason that did really have a war with each other. Changing an environment may have an effect on a person in many different ways, good and bad. People are who they are because of people that surround them. For example, Piggy grew up with his aunt, who spoiled him, and taught him about his asthma. Piggy proves he runs his life according to his aunt by saying, "My auntie told me not to run...on account of my asthma"(9). Piggy's new surroundings changed him into what he was in the story. An example of this would be when the other boys teased him. Because of their harsh treatment he was quiet and less self-confident. The boys were now his aunt and they now controlled how he acted and felt. Lord of the Flies is a good example of how people in your surroundings help make the person you are. In conclusion, your future is not decided at birth. The good and evil in mankind depends on the situations that happen, not on that one person. That is way I decided to return to school in order to earn my BSN. This paper will address the decisions that I will be making, the strategies I will use, and the milestones I will accomplish during my journey through the BSN at UOP, as well as in life. Once I had my personal and professional goals in mind, I was able to select the degree that was most likely to help me achieve my goals. I would like to start by saying that achieving my BSN is a short-term professional goal, and in order to reach my goal will be necessary to develop a plan of action that will facilitate the process of reaching my objectives. † According to Lazarus and Folkom (1984), adjustment to life events is mediated by the individual processes of cognitive appraisal and copying behavior†(Gall, Evans, Bellerose, 2000, p. 45). The authors believe that the living environment, familial relationships and the social support influence the copying behaviors of a student. In order to be able to adjust to the university’s requirements, one has to learn how to balance family, work and school, all at the same time. It is important to understand that sacrificing family time, recreational time and at some point work, will be a part of the overall effort. T his also leads to my short-term personal goal, which is to be able to pay for my tuition without gaining any debt. I am aware that I can only achieve this goal by working full time hours while in school. Although I have accomplished so many short-term goals in life, I am fully aware that my long-term goal will take a long time and will be the most challenging for me. To become a CRNA is not a simple thing to do because it requires a lot of hard work. I am also aware how difficult it is to get into the program, so my goal is to be an outstanding student, and finish each course with at least grade B. In addition, would have to work my way through acquiring at least 1000 hours in ICU and try to be the best at what I do. In the meantime, being able to accomplish my short –term professional goal, will help me facilitate other goals in my professional sector. A BSN will equip me with the necessary credentials required to seek a position in management in the Kaiser Health Care system. My personal long-term goal would be to live a healthy lifestyle, by eating healthy and staying physically active. † Nurses want to give their best to patients, but if they don’t look after themselves, how can they care effectively for patients? †(Kay, 1999, p. 49). Referring to what Kay stated, no matter what we are planning for, in order to be able to care for others it is important to maintain our health. My plan is to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily, exercise 30-60 minutes at least 3 times a week, eat at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies daily and spend quality time with family and friends. All these will contribute tremendously to my healthy living. All these goals can only be accomplished through hard work, perseverance and effort. What would be the necessary tools that I can use in order to be able to accomplish all my goals? Effective communication has become recognized in recent years as being essential to successful organizational operation and management†(Hawkins, 1981, p. 172). Being able to communicate effectively with my professors, peers and patients will enable me to engage in meaningful conversations. Other skills that will be necessary as I progress through the nursing program include: ability to conduct resear ch utilizing the UOP database, ability to read and write following the UOP guidelines and, ability to work effectively in a group. In order to accomplish my goals, the milestones that I must encounter along the way will include successful completion of all courses with at least grade B, and continuous employment as a full time nurse. The long-term milestone would be to become a CRNA and retire as a successful professional in 30 years. The effort made over the next few years will give my family and myself a much better life later on. Of course no milestone can be achieved without encountering barriers along the way. The only barrier that might posses a problem would be not to be able to balance work and school in the same time. In order for me to be able to pay for school without the use of any loans, would be to work full time hours. Partial tuition reimbursement and having a flexible schedule, as well as my ability to adapt to situations will help me minimize this aspect, and help me succeed in reaching my goals. It is difficult enough to manage time while being a student, however, it is more challenging when being a working student. My goal is to finish the program in the shortest time, paying the least amount of money and get accepted into the CRNA program. I am recognizing the need to become more organized, and learn how to set up priorities in order to manage my time more effectively; school should be first on the list followed by family and work. From my past experiences I have learned it is important to plan for the unexpected. Often, things that are not expected come up; therefore, it is important to leave some room in my calendar to be able to move things around when needed. Having so much to do, it is better to write everything down in order to be able to remember what comes next. All of the above are a contribution to strong time management skills. In conclusion, no personal or professional, goal as long as it is realistic, is too great to be accomplished. As long as one has the desire, patience, will and the necessary resources, no goal should be out of reach. All these goals are important for every human being; without them we cannot live fulfilling lives. Changing the text changes the whole book and since the book is so highly regarded as it is, it should remain the same. When people claim that a book is racist, they make this assumption based on the content of the book. What people need to note is when the book is set, its publication date, and the purpose of the offensive content. With The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the story takes place in the 1840s when racism was very common. It also was published in 1885 when people in the United States were struggling with racism after the Civil War. The offensive content of the book is used to portray what life was like in the 1840s and to mock the behavior of the people of that time. When the book was written, language like that used in the text was still common and not seen as offensive as it does now. Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not racist, it just contains racist content, and this content makes the story what it is and develops its meaning. To take away this major element of the literary work to protect the feelings of some individuals would ruin the story and would hurt more people than it would help. To censor The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn would take away a valuable source of historical knowledge that allows us to see the importance of how our society has changed and developed. Without this knowledge, people will forget the importance of the progress humankind has made and will not be able to avoid the mistakes we have already made as a whole in the past. Because of these reasons, changing the great literary work of Mark Twain Is unnecessary because The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not a racist text and exposure to the harsh realities in the story will help the people of today to truly understand our past as a whole and improve our future. This has created a situation where the state even lacks the most qualified professionals who would help to improve not only its health system but also the education of its children. The fact that people are discouraged from working in the area creates a dilemma, because with low quality of education and health care that results, there also develops the problem of high unemployment rates and coupled with low healthcare, the poverty is made even worse within the population. Considering the absence of public and private investment in the neglected areas of the state, better communication between the State and tribal governments, and more consideration to the requirements of the people of these areas, the poverty rate is estimated to upsurge (Kusel). While this may be a fact, it is also true that there are many underlying causes of the rampant poverty within the state and some of these shall be considered in greater detail. The causes of poverty in New Mexico have to be understood in order for decisions to be made on how to remedy them and bring the state into prosperity. Page-Reeves (33) states that New Mexico has the 13th highest rate of food insecurity in the United States and is related to the state of Mississippi as among the states with the highest poverty rates.
